Alex holds two Masters in Music degrees (Trombone Performance and Chamber Music, both from University of Michigan). He's been teaching piano privately for over 3 years and is an accomplished performer in both trombone and piano. He has worked extensively with youth at middle schools and high schools, as well as kids of all ages in private lessons.
Alex is also a composer, with many pieces to his credit. He has an outstanding background in music theory. While at University of Michigan, he was chosen by the UM Department of Music to assist the Department Chair in grading and tutoring for music theory students.
Alex loves to teach creative approaches to music, such as using fruit to explain rhythm concepts to kids, or inspiring more advanced students to truly bring music to life from the printed page. Parents of his students have said: "Immediately, Alex was receptive and sharp in recognizing the level of my daughter’s abilities, and he impressed her with his positive corrective feedback and praises while simultaneously making it fun for her." "My children have been under the professional instruction of many great music teachers in this community,...and the work of Alex VanDuuren is by far the best one I have witnessed." The Director of Band at Howard Bishop Middle School says, "He quickly built a great rapport with my students, set high expectations for them & gave them the tools to meet those expectations."
Alex currently has part-time positions with two Florida orchestras, two schools, and Gainesville Community Playhouse, as well as private students. We are thrilled to welcome him to work with Kaley School Level 1-3 Piano students and 1-4 Low Brass (trombone, euphonium, tuba) students.
